Happy Towel Day & Geek Pride Day

Geek Pride Day is an initiative to promote geek culture, celebrated on May 25th. The date was chosen as to commemorate the release of the first Star Wars film, A New Hope on May  25, 1977 (see Star Wars Day), but shares the same date as two other similar fan “holidays”: Towel Day, for fans of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy by Douglas Adams, and the Glorious May 25th for fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.

Towel Day is celebrated every year on May 25th as a tribute by fans of the author Douglas Adams. On this day, fans carry a towel with them to demonstrate their appreciation for the books and the author, as referred to in Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The commemoration was first held in 2001, two weeks after Adams’ death on May 11, 2001.

TinkerFest is a one-day festival that brings together makers, artisans, and tinkerers to showcase a craft, skill, or product while encouraging participation with museum visitors. Through hands-on activities, and engaging conversations, visitors learn the tools, techniques, and creativity of craftsman from Arkansas and beyond. Stations invite visitors to discover “making” in a new way. Some makers will be reusing, reclaiming, and reconstructing old materials in a new way; others will be showing a new product that will be a first-hand opportunity for visitors to interact with. From lock-picking, Arduino, and soldering to cigar-box guitars, sewing circuits and jewelry-making from junk, TinkerFest is a place for everyone.

Arkansas Geek Central turns 6 years old today. It doesn’t seem like it has been that long. All of this started due to missing a convention due to not knowing about it.

Website updates:
I was hoping to have a site revamp done by today, but other commitments kept me from getting started on the site. The revamp should hopefully be complete in the next month or so from now.
